Concern for Community
SHAFA is committed towards social development and encompasses various activities for its accomplishment.
COMMUNITY BASED PROGRAMS ON PREVENTION OF HIV/AIDS
The community based ‘DOST’ CARES PROJECT for the prevention of HIV/AIDS amongst IVDUs is one of them. Although there have been many prior efforts to address the twin epidemic of IDU and spread of HIV/AIDS in Delhi.
However, this project addresses the spread of HIV/AIDS by providing preventive measures, behavior change, and counseling facilities focusing on harm reduction among intravenous drug users (IVDUs)
AIDS EDUCATION IN SCHOOLS
Young people are highly vulnerable to HIV infection. To address the spread of HIV/AIDS among the young people, we started imparting age-appropriate information to young people in senior schools.
The objective of School AIDS Education Programme is to provide 100 per cent quality coverage for all senior schools in the North-West District of Delhi so that students in classes 9-11 have adequate and accurate knowledge about HIV in the context of life-skills.
PROGRAMME ON DRUG ABUSE PREVENTION & LIFE SKILL ENHANCEMENT
SHAFA Community outreach is in the form of street plays, corner meetings, distribution of printed materials, which helps to spread awareness in the community about drugs, alcohol, crime and violence. At the end of each outreach programme, staff and volunteers interact with the Community to answer their questions, offer guidance and procure a feedback from them.
AWARENESS CUM FAMILY COUNSELING CENTERS
We run awareness cum family counseling centers in the two states of India i.e. Delhi and Uttranchal. These centers serve as a meeting point for family members, organizing family meetings and spreading awareness in the neighboring areas. With the help of our recovering drug dependents, effected families are brought to these centers for help.
One to one counseling is provided to these co-dependents and they are motivated to bring their loved ones in treatment. Also, some training on life skill education is being carried out for the selected family members in these three states. Some motivated family members have joined the self-support groups and have become the carriers of SHAFA’s message.
LIFE SKILL ENHANCEMENT PROGRAMME
SHAFA has also being involved in prevention activities in schools, colleges, mainly with students at risk. At SHAFA we always believe that it’s better to put efforts and energy’s at the primary prevention level thus avoiding indulgence in deviant behaviors & resulting in quality lifestyle & enhanced performance.
Keeping this in mind SHAFA has been regularly involved with various awareness-building activities in schools and colleges. SHAFA is also involved in imparting life-skill enhancement programmes for children at risk.
REMEDIAL TEACHING FOR STUDENTS
The project addresses the problems of non-enrolments, dropouts, non-completion and gender and social disparities through a variety of strategies. Remedial teaching and community mobilization ensures that out-of-school children aged 6-14 are being enrolled in formal schools, including NIOS. Remedial courses will increase retention by providing children with extra academic support. Balwadis will also contribute to better retention by preparing pre-scholars for entrance to formal school.
