6 Healthy Foods to Boost Your Addiction Recovery

In order to maintain a healthy recovery from an addiction you must pay attention to several things including your emotional, mental, and physical health; this includes your nutritional intake.

By eating healthy, you are giving your body the essential vitamins and minerals that it requires.

Through this, you are able to speed up your addiction recovery, boost your health, restore and maintain energy, elevate your mood, and keep your vital organs functioning properly.

Below are various foods that will help you to boost your overall health; thus furthering your recovery from an addiction.

Healthy Food for Your Lungs

Oftentimes, addicts will have lung problems due to smoking, huffing, or lack of exercise.

Our lungs allow us to breathe; this simple act requires a lot of energy, the damage that an addiction can cause on the lungs, plus a lack of healthy food intake, can have some harmful effects.

Foods rich in antioxidants, magnesium, and omega-3’s are great to improve lungs; therefore, improve your breathing and blood flow.

Try in-taking more green leafy vegetables such as kale, spinach, and bokchoy; all can be easily found in most groceries.

Flax seeds or oil, salmon, and chia seeds are very high in omega-3’s while berries, kidney beans, pinto beans, artichokes, and apples are all high in several antioxidants.

Healthy Foods for Your Liver

Addictions such as alcohol, inhalants, or any drug that is injected can have serious effects on the liver.

The liver is responsible for detoxifying harmful chemicals and free radicals that a person ingests.

A poorly functioning liver can cause headaches, bad breath, allergies, skin problems, tiredness, and weight gain.

Although an addiction can cause irreversible damage to the liver, oftentimes much of the damage can be reversed through remaining sober and eating foods that can repair the damage.

Foods high in sulfur can help to detoxify the liver while foods high in antioxidants can help to heal it.

Garlic, onions, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, beetroot, and lemon are all detoxifiers and help to eliminate any buildup that the addiction caused.

Prunes, raisons, berries, plums, oranges, pink grapefruit, cantaloupe, apples and pears are all high in antioxidants.

Healthy Foods for Your Brain

Any addiction, especially long term, to drugs or alcohol will likely cause some kind of cognitive impairment; it may be anywhere from memory loss, to the inability to perform skills, or remember things.

In most cases, these losses of cognitive abilities can be restored through a number of things including therapy, problem solving, and of course, healthy foods.

Foods with omega-3′ include flax and salmon while foods with flavonoids include cocoa, green tea, and citrus fruit are great to boost brainpower.

Additionally avocados, walnuts, tomatoes, ginger, and lentils are full of minerals, vitamins, and healthy fats that can aid in restoring brain cells and boost addiction recovery.

Healthy Foods for Your Energy

It is not uncommon for an addict to lack energy not only while they were using or drinking, but even during their recovery.

A lack of energy can cause all kinds of problems from sleeping problems, to stress and weight gain.

Healthy carbohydrates such as whole grain breads and cereal are great for an energy boost as well as antioxidants and green leafy vegetables (see above).

Additionally, honey is an excellent source of energy and is loaded with the essentials that the body needs.

All nuts such as peanuts, almonds, and pistachios are excellent sources of minerals and contain vitamins A, B and E, potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and iron.

Water is an Absolute Must

Each and every person depends on water for optimal health and survival.

Water flushes the body and eliminates toxins from vital organs such as the kidneys.

Instead of waiting for the thirst to kick in, drink water throughout the day, especially before and after exercise and anytime it is very hot outside.

Good nutrition and a healthy recovery from addiction go hand in hand.

It is important to maintain a well balanced diet and consume the least amount of packaged foods or those that are loaded with artificial flavoring and high amounts of sugar; energy and soft drinks should also be avoided.
